In March 1966, brothers Paul Van Doren and Jim Van Doren got together with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia to open a shop that made shoes. The Van Doren Rubber Company was in Anaheim, California, and Vans’ first shoes were deck shoes.

Skateboarders and surfers loved Vans shoes' rugged make-up and sticky sole. More designs were introduced in the 1970s. In 1978, the Sk8-Hi was born, and skateboarders loved how the shoe protected their ankles when skating. Ten years later, in 1988, Vans’ first signature shoe, The Half Cab, was introduced by skateboarding legend Steve Caballero. The Half Cab is the world’s most iconic signature skateboarding shoe; it has stood the test of time and is still popular today.
